SUMMARY:Air Pruned Raised Beds for Tree Seedling Production: Part2
DESCRIPTION:Cornell Cooperative Extension Tompkins County\, in conjunction with the Cornell Small Farms Program\, is offering a hands-on workshop on Air Pruned Raised Beds (APRBs). \nAPRBs offer an innovative\, scalable approach to propagating tree seedlings. By naturally pruning roots through air exposure\, this system produces seedlings with stronger root architecture\, higher transplant success\, and the ability to grow large volumes of bare-root stock in a small footprint—no land ownership required. APRBs are adaptable to both urban and rural contexts and support high-density seedling production for a wide range of species. \nParticipants will learn how to harvest seedlings from an APRB\, how to overwinter beds with or without seedlings\, how to plant baby trees\, strategies for seed collection and storage\, and markets and regulations. We can also briefly review topics from the first workshop (construction of APRBs\, growing media\, species selection\, seed collection\, preservation\, germination\, and potential markets). Requirements for selling nursery stock in NYS will also be addressed. This workshop is ideal for producers seeking to diversify into a new\, efficient tree seedling production system. \nAttendees can take CCE APRB trees home while supplies last. Early registrants will have priority. \nThe session will be led by Connor Youngerman\, Agroforestry lead with the Cornell Small Farms Program. \nThere is no charge for the workshop\, however\, pre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Native Landscapes: Management and Planting Strategies at NYS Parks
DESCRIPTION:New York State Parks is increasing the use of native plants in our shared public spaces\, following a native plant policy that encourages using beneficial species in all landscaping and gardening projects. In this discussion we will go over management strategies that help horticulture staff balance aesthetic and ecological goals in landscape restoration and garden sites around the Finger Lakes state park region. The pros and cons of different planting and establishment strategies will also be discussed. \nInstructor’s bio: Max McCune has been a Horticulturalist at New York State Parks since 2018\, he works to design\, maintain and manage native plant restorations and gardens throughout the Finger Lakes region. Prior to his work at parks\, Max worked at plant nurseries and sustainable farming operations in Ithaca and in his hometown of Hiton\, NY. Max has a bachelor’s degree in history from SUNY Oswego. \nThis class is offered either online or in-person. \nFee\nThis program is valued at $20\, however\, please pay what you are able.
